GitHub Copilot pauses Pro signups, removes Opus from Pro plans
GitHub paused Copilot Pro/Pro+/Student signups and removed Opus from Pro. Stated reason: agentic workflows consume more than plans were built for.
GitHub paused new sign-ups for Copilot Pro, Pro+, and Student plans, tightened usage limits, and removed Opus models from Pro plans — Opus 4.7 remains available only on Pro+. The stated reason: agentic workflows “regularly consume far more resources than the original plan structure was built to support.” Refunds are available through May 20, 2026.
Practitioner note
This is the first major AI coding vendor to publicly admit that agentic-workflow unit economics are forcing a plan restructure. It’s a leading indicator — expect Cursor, Replit, and others to follow with similar tightening within 1-2 quarters as their own paid plans start showing the same shape of cost overruns.
For your own usage: if you’ve been using Copilot Pro with Opus, you’ll need to decide whether the upgrade to Pro+ is worth it for your volume, or whether you switch tooling entirely. Now is a good moment to actually measure your token consumption rather than guess.
