Mistral raises 3 billion euros for sovereign AI infrastructure

Read this because This funding validates the shift toward open-weight models that allow enterprises to retain full control over data and compute.

Mistral secured a 3 billion euro Series D round to expand its open-weight AI stack and global infrastructure.

Record-Breaking European Fundraise

Mistral has announced the completion of a Series D funding round totaling 3 billion euros. The round values the company at more than 21 billion euros on a post-money basis. This marks the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company. The achievement comes three years after the company’s initial launch. Samsung Electronics led the investment, joined by co-leads Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and existing investor PSG Equity.

Expanding the Sovereign Stack

The new capital will significantly expand Mistral’s frontier research, which serves as the foundation for its infrastructure, products, and sovereignty. The funding allows Mistral to scale its compute capacity for training powerful models. It also supports the expansion of infrastructure and accelerates commercial growth and international footprint. Mistral currently operates across 20 countries and supports more than 125 global enterprises in their mission-critical AI transformation. Notable clients include Airbus, ASML, and HSBC.

Control and Independence

The company positions itself as the only AI firm building the full stack required to address the need for performance with control. This stack includes open-weight models, the infrastructure and compute capacity they run on, and the products that bring them into production. This approach ensures customers are never locked into a single vendor’s roadmap, pricing, or availability. Mistral describes this as the sovereign AI layer, which retains control across four dimensions. These include data that stays inside organizational boundaries, models that are controllable and customizable, compute that is private and predictable, and systems in production that are fully controllable and auditable.

Strategic Investor Support

The round reflects strategic endorsement from investors across Europe, Asia, and North America. New investors include Advent, funds and accounts managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Existing investors participating in the round include a16z, ASML, Belfius, BNP Paribas CIB, Bpifrance, Carmignac, DST Global, Eurazeo, General Catalyst, Headline, Hillspire, Index Ventures, Korelya Capital, Lightspeed, NVIDIA, Phoenix Court’s Solar fund, and Salesforce Ventures. This syndicate includes companies at the forefront of advanced manufacturing, engineering, and industrial technology.

Practitioner note

Developers should monitor Mistral’s open-weight releases, as the company is scaling compute to train more powerful models. The emphasis on a full-stack sovereign approach suggests that enterprise deployments will increasingly prioritize local data governance and vendor independence over pure model performance metrics.
