Rebuilding AUTOMATIC1111 Features with Gradio Workflow Nodes

Read this because Builders can leverage Gradio's operator model to create complex, modular AI pipelines without custom routing code, enabling rapid prototyping of multi-stage media workflows.

Yuvraj Sharma and Abubakar Abid demonstrate Workflow1111, a Gradio canvas that replicates AUTOMATIC1111's core media pipelines using seventy-three nodes.

A Graph-Based Approach to Media Pipelines

Yuvraj Sharma and Abubakar Abid have introduced Workflow1111, a project that reconstructs the feature set of AUTOMATIC1111’s stable-diffusion-webui as a single Gradio Workflow canvas. This graph consists of eleven media pipelines built from seventy-three nodes. The system integrates state-of-the-art models for text-to-image generation, high-resolution fixes, image-to-image editing, prompt matrices, vision-language model interrogation, detection-based inpainting masks, ControlNet-style annotators, background removal, PNG metadata storage, and image-to-video conversion.

Core Operators and Node Types

All media pipelines on the canvas are constructed from four operator kinds: Python functions (fn), models called via InferenceClient, other Gradio Spaces, and Hub dataset rows. Each node wraps one operator, exposing its inputs and outputs as ports for edge connections. This structure allows developers to mix local processing with remote model calls seamlessly. For instance, while some nodes require network calls, others run entirely in-process, ensuring that roughly two-thirds of the canvas remains functional even if the internet connection is lost.

Key Pipeline Implementations

The text-to-image pipeline mirrors AUTOMATIC1111’s txt2img tab, handling negative prompts, steps, CFG, and seeds. A prompt-builder function appends style presets and cleans text before passing it to a model node. The hi-resolution fix is implemented as a two-node detour using a FLUX.1-Kontext model to enhance detail and upscale the image. Image-to-image functionality shares this Kontext node, allowing users to upload an image and describe desired changes.

Advanced features include an LLM-assisted prompt generator using Qwen3-4B to convert rough ideas into tag lists, and a VLM interrogator using Qwen2.5-VL to generate prompts from images. Detection pipelines use DETR to identify objects and generate inpaint masks locally with Pillow and NumPy. The prompt matrix feature runs four text-to-image nodes in parallel to create contact sheets, as Gradio Workflow lacks a loop operator. Upscaling and background removal utilize both local functions and remote Spaces like AuraSR and BRIA RMBG-2.0.

Local Execution and API Exposure

While many calls go to remote hardware, fn nodes can load models locally on a user’s GPU. The app exposes nine REST endpoints for every output node, allowing external clients to interact with the workflow. Additionally, launching with MCP support turns these outputs into tools for AI assistants like Claude Code or Cursor, enabling agents to generate images or run detection as part of larger tasks without writing glue code.
