Empirical Study Reveals Key Design Choices for Coding Agents

Read this because Developers building autonomous coding agents can optimize efficiency and accuracy by tuning context management and action spaces based on model strength.

Research on coding harnesses shows context management and action space design significantly impact performance and cost.

Breaking Down Monolithic Evaluations

Coding harnesses play a critical role in translating model capabilities into long-horizon software-engineering performance. However, existing research typically evaluates these harnesses as monolithic systems, which obscures the effectiveness of individual components. To address this gap, a new empirical study introduces a lightweight coding harness with a fixed execution loop. This modular approach allows for component-level comparisons by varying three specific elements: planning, action space, and context management.

Context Management and Efficiency

The study evaluated 176 matched settings across four different models using the SWE-Bench Verified and Terminal-Bench 2.1 datasets. These evaluations covered five context-management strategies, four context-window budgets, and targeted ablations of planning and action space. The results indicate that context management becomes increasingly valuable as the context-window budget tightens. Most of the benefit derived from these strategies comes from preventing context-overflow failures. Among the strategies tested, staging rule-based elision before LLM-based summarization provided the strongest overall efficiency. Conversely, making elided content recoverable added machinery that models rarely utilized, yielding no gain in accuracy.

Planning and Action Space Dynamics

The role of planning shifts depending on the model’s capability. For weaker models, planning acts as an accuracy scaffold. For stronger models, it primarily serves as a cost saver with little change in accuracy. The action space also significantly influences performance. Predefined tools improve performance for models with weaker bash proficiency. In contrast, bash-capable models can operate effectively with a bash-only interface, achieving substantially lower costs, particularly on command-line-centric tasks.

Trajectory Analysis

Trajectory-level analysis helps explain these effects. Context management extends execution trajectories without substantially altering agent behavior. Planning changes where trajectories stop, while the action space determines the granularity at which code is written. These findings provide a modular framework for evaluating future harness components and inform model- and budget-aware harness design.

Practitioner note

Developers should tailor their coding harness configurations to the specific strengths of their underlying models. Prioritize rule-based elision for efficiency and consider bash-only interfaces for models with strong command-line capabilities to reduce costs.
